It is the goal of every Kenyan to invest and earn a decent living. However, if you are aspiring to be a successful agripreneur don’t be mislead to invest your money with any company in any business scheme, who ask you to do nothing and expect to be an overnight millionaire. This is a lazy man’s thinking. Your millions will end up in smoke.
In my years of agribusiness, I have run several agri-projects both personal and for clients ranging from bee farming, greenhouse, pig, poultry farming et cetera and can tell you for a fact that you have to invest and do much much more to realize profits.
Please ignore most of these advertisements going on in the media. Manilla farm was there, wealthsmith, PRC was there promoted widely by a popular FM station, quails were there and there are others already in the making. My brothers and sisters conduct due diligence.
What should you do if you want to invest in Agribusiness and you don’t have the Skills/Expertise? Here are a few tips:
- Engage Credible Extension & Training Institutions. There are already established institutions where you can get all the information and skills you need to invest in Agribusiness. One such institution is the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KARLO), Agricultural Training Centres (ATCs) and other well established private farms.
- Research and Research – You cannot succeed in a business you know nothing about. You need to research about source of seed/breeds, resources needed, market channels, available technologies e.t.c The internet is a good tool to help you in your research.
- Conduct a Company Review before investing– Study the company profile and its relationship to its’ clients. This will give you a very good evaluation of the company you are dealing with. Do you always check for reviews before downloading an app from the app store? Do the same for the companies.
- Invest in your human resource – many farmers start projects worth thousands and even millions but fail to invest in human resource. They choose less trained workers so they can pay them cheap wages. Remember your workers are the ones to translate your goals into action and your investment into profits. The less they are trained the more you will be frustrated by their performance.
