The government plans to import 3 million metric tons of wheat in the next two years.
Agriculture Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Andrew Tuimur says the imports will be used to cushion the country against a projected deficit of the commodity.
Wheat farmers in the country have been assured of a market for their produce once they harvest their crop even as the government plans to import 3 million metric tonnes of wheat in the next two years to cushion the country against a projected deficit.
Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang however cautioned against importation while the crop is nearly ready for harvesting.
The country produces 400,000 metric tons of wheat annually against an annual consumption of 900,000 metric tons. They were speaking at a farmer’s field day in Nandi County.
